As expected, Twitter is tweaking its timeline to show users the best tweets from people they follow.
But before you freak out, know that the algorithmic timeline is optional. If you activate it, the entries Twitter thinks you're most likely to care about will appear at the top of the timeline—still in reverse chronological order. The tweets Twitter deems less important will be displayed underneath, also in reverse chronological order. Just pull to refresh and new messages will appear at the top of your live feed. If you don't like it, revisit Settings to turn it off.
"We've already seen that people who use this new feature tend to retweet and tweet more, creating more live commentary and conversations, which is great for everyone," senior engineering manager Mike Jahr wrote in a blog post.
Don't fret if you don't see the option just yet; Twitter's slow rollout will continue over the coming weeks. Users can expect a notification in their timeline once the function is available. But if you miss it, Twitter's support page has instructions for activating it on Twitter.com, iOS, and Android.
Twitter tested a similar formula last year when it added a "While you were away" section to the top of timelines, highlighting a few of the best tweets that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.
With this new system, though, it remains unclear how the social network will evaluate content and float the more compelling bits to the top. Will it be based on hearts and retweets? Interactions with other Twitter users?
Rumors about an updated Twitter timeline emerged last week, and many users were not happy with the decision, resulting in the #RIPTwitter hashtag.
