Snapchat to Let Users Subscribe to 'Discover' Brands

In an effort to get more people interested in its Discover platform Snapchat is reportedly looking into allowing its users to subscribe to publishers directly rather than having to seek them out individually.

According to Re/code, the move could include companies like MTV, BuzzFeed, Mashable, IGN, and The Daily Mail, to name a few. Snapchat is considering a May launch for this subscription feature, but it's possible that timeframe could shift.

As part of the changes, Snapchat might swap the crude, simple logos in its Discover section for more dynamic content—like a magazine-style image that showcases what each publisher is highlighting each day. The belief is that less-static, more-preview-like content would entice people to tap on brands they're most interested in.

The subscription process would also dump publishers' content directly on a person's Stories page, which likely has a bit more eye traffic given that most users probably tap and see what their friends are up to each day. Even though the current Discover tab is just north of that within the app, pushing new content to users' Stories pages would also give them the added advantage of, well, being able to see when their subscribed-to media sources have new things to say. Right now, you just have to tap on an entity's logo in the Discover section and hope you haven't already seen all of its content.

Already, as Re/code notes, most publisher traffic comes directly from Snapchat's Stories page ever since the company redesigned the page to prominently place these brands toward the top. While Snapchat isn't saying so, it's also possible that Snapchat's interest in helping these brands better promote their content is an indication that they just aren't getting the kind of traffic that they, or Snapchat, would like to see.

We don't really know how the subscription element will work just yet. It's possible that subscribing to a brand would mean that Snapchat will shoot you a little notification when it publishes something new, in the same style as it currently does whenever friends post new content. It's also possible that Snapchat might even allow publishers to link directly to their content on Snapchat, which would then allow them to prompt users to sign up for said publishers' content (if they haven't already).
