Apple's iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus could break new sales records, the company confirmed today.
"Customer response to iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has been extremely positive and pre-orders this weekend were very strong around the world," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller told PCMag. "We are on pace to beat last year's 10 million unit first-weekend record when the new iPhones go on sale September 25."
Apple did not say exactly how many iPhone 6s pre-orders were purchased over the weekend.
Apple announced its new iPhone 6s lineup at a special press event last week. While the devices look nearly identical to the company's previous models, they feature a higher-end processor, as well as a new 3D Touch feature that allows users to vary the pressure with which they press on the screen to interact in new ways with the software.
Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which launched last year, set the all-time sales record for launch-weekend sales, selling through 10 million units over the three-day period. That was due in part to Apple finally embracing a larger form factor: its phone expanded from 4 inches to 4.7 inches for the 6 and 5.5 inches for the 6 Plus. The iPhone 6s lineup doesn't have any exterior changes, prompting some to wonder whether it could match its predecessor.
Those suspicions changed over the weekend as the iPhone 6s went on pre-order and quickly sold out. Customers hoping to buy a new iPhone now will either be stuck waiting in line on launch day or will need to wait a bit longer if they decide to order the device over the Web.
In fact, not even Apple anticipated how many people would pre-order its new smartphones over the weekend.
"As many customers noticed, the online demand for iPhone 6s Plus has been exceptionally strong and exceeded our own forecasts for the pre-order period," Muller said. "We are working to catch up as quickly as we can, and we will have iPhone 6s Plus as well as iPhone 6s units available at Apple retail stores when they open next Friday."
The iPhone 6s was announced alongside a new Apple TV, the new iPad Pro, and an update to Apple Watch's operating system, WatchOS 2.
