Sony Xperia Z5 Premium Sports 4K Display

BERLIN—Sony used its IFA press conference here to reveal its new Xperia Z5 lineup, including what it says is the world's first 4K smartphone, the Xperia Z5 Premium.

The Xperia Z5 boasts the company's most advanced smartphone camera yet, with a hybrid autofocus and 0.03-second focus speed. It also features a 5x "Clear Image Zoom" that uses the camera's 23-megapixel image sensor to produce high-detail digital zoom images, and an improved SteadyShot image stabilization mode. A 5-megapixel shooter is on the front, and it will come in black, white, gold, and green.

The Z5 sports a 5.2-inch 1,920-by-1080 display, its metal-and-glass body is waterproof, and a fingerprint sensor is built into the power button on the side. It runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core processor, an Adreno 430 GPU and 3GB RAM, as well as Google Android 5.1 Lollipop.

The Xperia Z5 Premium has a larger, 5.5-inch display to show off that 3,840-by-2160 4K display, and will come in black or gold, but specs are otherwise the same as the Z5.

For those who want a smaller device, the Xperia Z5 Compact has 4.3-inch 1,280-by-720 display and 2GB of RAM, but is also similar to its larger siblings. It will come in black, white, yellow, or coral.

Sony continues to promote high-resolution audio with new devices that support lossless media formats. The company revealed a new Walkman media player and a new headphone line to go with it, focused on high-res audio. The new series is called h.ear, and includes on-ear and in-ear headphone models, which incorporate active noise cancellation. All h.ear headphones and the newest Walkman are available in multiple colors, highlighting fashion options for users. They will be available in November for $199.99. Sony also hinted at new car and home speaker systems built to work with high-res audio, as well.

PlayStation news is usually reserved for E3, Gamescom, and the Tokyo Game Show, but Sony did discuss expanding the PlayStation ecosystem. It made no specific announcements, but will be showing off its Project Morpheus virtual reality system at IFA later this week.

Sony is also showing off new LightSpace UX products, with updated versions of its portable 4K short-throw projector and speaker-equipped LED light bulb. It will also be shown off at Sony's booth when the show begins this Friday. Also watch out for several new concept products developed as part of Sony's Seed Acceleration Program, including an e-ink-based remote, a smart lock, and two new, unique smartwatches.
