Samsung Chip to Bring 6GB of RAM to Your Smartphone

Samsung has developed a new chip that will bring far more memory to the latest and greatest smartphones.

Samsung's new dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip is capable of delivering 6GB of onboard memory to smartphones. The chip, which is now going into mass production, consumes 20 percent less energy and is 30 percent faster than previous memory chips from the company.

Many of today's top-of-the-line flagship smartphones come with around 3GB of onboard memory. With help from Samsung's new chip, handset makers can now double that amount, allowing for much faster performance across the operating system.

"6GB of LPDDR4 mobile DRAM will allow consumers to enjoy seamless multitasking and maximum  performance within the latest operating system (OS) environments," Samsung said in a statement.

Although the new memory chip will provide more capacity than previous models, it won't be any larger. In fact, Samsung said that it was able to deliver the enahnced performance without sacrificing size, so it can fit into the same spaces as current 3GB memory chips.

Looking ahead, Samsung didn't say which companies may have interest in its new and improved chip, but it expects it to come to other types of devices.

"Application areas will expand beyond smartphones and tablets to include ultra-slim PCs, digital appliances and automotive devices, in the coming years," the company said.
