Report: Samsung Wants Gear S2 Smartwatch to Work on iOS

One of the frustrations of the smartwatch world is that so many devices are tied to specific platforms. For example, if you fancied the look of Asus' original Zenwatch, but have been an Apple loyork with iOS.

The same holds true for the Apple Watch, of course—don't expect to ever see salist for some time, then the smartwatch becomes a pretty dumb wrist accessory given its inability to wome kind of Apple-created Android app that lets you interact with the watch on a non-Apple device. Not happening.

Samsung has been somewhat notorious for forcing its early smartwatches to not only be Android-exclusive, but Samsung-device-exclusive as well. While its Android smartphones are undeniably popular, and have allowed the company to reach the largest worldwide market share of any smartphone manufacturer, that doesn't mean that everyone owns a Samsung device (obviously). And if you don't, no Samsung smartwatch for you; at least, not until the official release of its recently announced Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch, which is compatible with any Android smartphones running at least version 4.4 of the OS (if they have at least 1.5GB of memory).

However, Samsung isn't just getting more open about Android in general. It's apparently even contemplating "that other platform," too. According to a Samsung spokesperson, as reported by Digital Spy, the company might soon start trying to get its smartwatches working with Apple's devices.

"We are looking at possibilities to open it up to iOS," the spokesperson told Digital Spy, later noting that the reasoning for doing: "Because we opened it up to Android, we are looking at this."

Of course, if you were expecting Samsung to throw out some kind of timeline for getting the Gear S2 working on iOS, you'd be dreaming. While the company is "positively looking into opening it up," Samsung neglected to tease out even a general idea of when that might happen—if it happens. Still, it's a pleasant thought, and a great way for Samsung to possibly attract some of the Apple crowd that hasn't already fallen for the company's own Watch.
