Live-streamed content is headed to the next Apple TV, if a new rumor is true.
Citing "multiple" unnamed sources, TechCrunch on Tuesday reported that Twitter's live-streaming app Periscope will be available on the new Apple TV, which is expected to make its debut today as part of Apple's iPhone event. The app will reportedly let you watch Periscope livestreams on your TV, but may not let you share your own video.
"Though we can't confirm the exact functionality of the app, it's likely to be focused on watching streams," the report notes. "Periscope made videos viewable on the Web in June without the ability to broadcast, and the Apple TV app could work similarly."
There's no word as to when the app will arrive, but Periscope is reportedly working on it now. Apple may show off the app at its event today alongside the new Apple TV, but we'll just have to wait and see.
The iPhone will, of course, be the main attraction at today's event, but there have also been rumors about Apple TV and new iPads. In the case of the Apple TV, rumors tip a larger, pricier set-top box with Siri integration, and its own App Store with API support so developers can create apps for it. Expect to pay about $149, though the existing $69 device will remain on the market.
Universal search will also reportedly be part of the equation. Instead of going from app to app looking for something to watch, you could search across all apps at once to found out which service was streaming Mad Men, for example.
