Looking for some new apps, but don't want to pay for them? Amazon's new Android app, dubbed Underground, offers the same functionality as the regular Amazon mobile shopping app with one perk: free apps, games, and in-app items.
As most users know, many free apps and games aren't actually free. Sure, you can download the app for nothing, but you'll often need to pay to unlock certain features or levels.
Amazon Underground offers 100 percent free versions of popular premium titles like OfficeSuite Professional 8, Goat Simulator, and PhotoSuite 4 as well as titles with in-app purchases like Frozen Free Fall, Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions, Angry Birds Slingshot Stella, Looney Tunes Dash!, and more.
Those who use Amazon Underground, however, won't be paying for those premium or in-app features because Amazon is footing the bill.
Amazon will pay developers "a certain amount on a per-minute played basis in exchange for them waiving their normal in-app fees," the company said. "To be clear, we're the ones picking up those per minute charges so for you it's simply free. Just look for apps with an 'Actually Free' banner."
Even better — this isn't just a one-off promotion. Amazon said the Underground app is a "long-term program," which will deliver even more benefits in the future.
Underground apps will automatically be available on Fire HD and Fire HDX tablets. Other Android device owners can head over to Amazon.com/underground to download the app directly from Amazon. You can't download it from Google Play because Google doesn't allow any apps that offer other apps or games in its store.
