PlayStation 4 sales outpaced those of all other game consoles in the US in March, according to Sony.
The company also said it was the top console for Tom Clancy's The Division, though it did not provide specific sales figures. Industry research firm NPD, however, said The Division was mostly responsible for an 8 percent boost in video game software sales last month, while the title had the best first-month sales of any Tom Clancy title to date, thanks in part to a marketing blitz and interest generated by a popular beta program.
Set in New York City following a "devastating pandemic" that has left the city in chaos, the online-only open world third-person shooter challenges players to restore order as a member of The Division, "an autonomous unit of tactical sleeper agents trained to save society as an emergency response."
"Overall sales of new launch titles grew by 26 percent, with those launched in [the first quarter] collectively selling 28 percent higher in March than Q1'15 launches performed during the same time period last year. This speaks to the strength of this year's launch slate so far," NPD analyst Liam Callahan said in a statement.
The video game industry as a whole took in $964 million in March. That was mostly flat compared to the same period last year, largery because hardware makers have offered steeper discounts, so revenue declined 19 percent, according NPD.
That PlayStation 4 is the most popular console in the US is not surprising; it has also achieved strong sales worldwide, with Sony selling 35.9 million units globally as of January, including nearly 6 million units during the 2015 holiday season.
