There's excited, and then there's "we're going to announce an accessory for a smartphone we haven't even announced yet" excited. LG currently finds itself in the latter camp, having just revealed its LG G5 Quick Cover case for the aforementioned smartphone—which is itself expected to make its debut at Mobile World Congress later this month.
Even LG itself teases this fact in its press release, though.
"LG Electronics took the wraps off a new version of its Quick Cover case, designed specifically for LG's next generation flagship smartphone, LG G5, which does not yet exist. Known as a company ahead of the times, LG took this characterization to heart by revealing the existence of the accessory before the actual product."
Earlier this week, LG confirmed that the LG G5 will have an always-on display, and the Quick Cover takes advantage of that with a semi-transparent design. You'll be able to answer calls and turn off the phone's alarm without having to flip open the case, and a small window in the cover will let you see the phone's "always-on" section. That will probably show you the time, some notifications, and other data (like who's calling) depending on what your smartphone is doing.
"LG also incorporated a unique film with a glossy metallic finish to enhance the smooth and luxurious look and feel of the cover for maximum consistency with the speculative LG G5," reads LG's description.
Missing in the press release are any additional details about the capabilities of the LG G5 itself. LG doesn't even really show off its LG G5 smartphone in its product shots for the Quick Cover case—all you get is a single view of the smartphone's covered face, so you can kind of discern its shape, but that's it.
Pricing was not revealed, but we'll probably find out more during LG's MWC press conference on Feb. 21.
