Next Hitman Game Delayed Until March

The next installment of the Hitman franchise won't be launching this year as expected.

Fans were expecting the game to land on Dec. 8 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. But it will now arrive in March 2016, developer IO Interactive announced.

IO Interactive called the game "the biggest venture we've ever undertaken … Not just in terms of scope and ambition but also in terms of the size of the game world itself." The company added that the playable area and density of locations "goes beyond" anything it has ever built.

"We're striving to create a series of living, breathing worlds in those locations and we get pretty obsessed about every detail that you'll experience," IO Interactive said. "We want to make absolutely sure you all get the best possible experience when you join, so we've made the difficult decision to move the initial release date to March 2016."

IO Interactive said the extra time will allow for a better launch experience. The company is planning to initially put out a "good chunk of the game" and then release the remaining locations over time. With three extra months, the company can add more launch content to the game than it had originally planned.

"Moving a launch date is never an easy decision, we know it's frustrating to have to wait a bit longer for the game, but we truly believe it will mean we can deliver a better launch and overall experience," the company said.

IO Interactive promised to share more details about the project, including the full release schedule, next week.
