Social-networking app Snapchat has developed a new way for
people to remember the things that matter.
Dubbed Memories, the new feature will allow users to save
Snaps and Stories into a single slideshow-like frame for personal use, Snapchat
announced in a blog post on Wednesday. It lives under the Camera screen; swipe
up to see favorite moments.
"You can use Memories to create new Stories from Snaps
you've taken, or even combine different Stories into a longer narrative,"
the company said. "It's fun to celebrate an anniversary or birthday by
finding a few old Snaps and stringing them together into a new Story."
It might seem counterproductive for the ephemeral messaging
service to allow users to save content and create Memories around a particular
topic. Evaluated through the lens of its evolution, however, Snapchat's move
makes sense.
Memories are created by first searching for a particular
Snap or Story; it can interpret keywords like "dog" or
"Hawaii." From there, Memories can be shared with others.
"We've also created a new way to send Snaps from
Memories to your friends, or even post them to your Story," the company
said. "If you post a Snap you took more than a day ago to your Story, it
will appear with a frame around it so that everyone knows it's from the
past."
On the privacy front, users will be able to convert Snaps
and Stories to "My Eyes Only," so friends won't find a Snap they
shouldn't see. Snapchat also said it'll back up Memories, but won't back up
photos or videos from the user's Camera Roll unless the item is used in the
app.
Memories will roll it out "selectively" to users
in the next several weeks. Users will be alerted when they get access to the
new feature via chat.
