Dallas police used a bomb-carrying robot to kill one of the
suspects in last night's deadly police shooting, the city's police chief
confirmed this morning.
"We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and
place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was,"
Dallas Police Chief David Brown told reporters in a Friday morning press
conference that the department broadcast via Periscope (below).
"Other options would've exposed officers to grave
danger," Chief Brown said.
Brown did not elaborate on what type of robot was used, but
he confirmed that detonating the explosives killed the suspect. Contrary to
earlier reports, the suspect did not take his own life, according to Brown.
The decision to use the robot came after a prolonged
stand-off. Police cornered the suspect at El Centro College in downtown Dallas
and "tried to negotiate for several hours," Chief Brown said. Those
negotiations eventually broke down and the suspect once again opened fire on
police, prompting their use of the robot.
The shooting, which happened at a protest over recent police
shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana, killed five officers and left several
others gravely injured.
