Teenagers Are Going to Hate Verizon's Hum Update

Owners of Verizon's Hum already know a lot more about what their cars are up to than most people - from what that check engine light really means to where your car actually is.

But Verizon apparently isn't content to let its $14.99-per-month assistant do the bare minimum. The company will soon roll out an update that adds boundary alerts. So, if you have forbidden your teenager from driving the car beyond a certain distance or location, you can receive an alert if they drive out of bounds.

The Hum will also be able to alert you whenever the car it's attached to has exceeded a certain speed. And said alerts can go out to multiple people at once in the form of an email, a text message, or even a notification within the Hub's accompanying smartphone app. And, no, the Hum can't prevent your car from hitting, say, 88 miles per hour; it can only let you know when someone is joyriding.

"Family members now have the opportunity to remain connected to their teenage drivers, elderly parents and others on the road, putting them in the passenger seat, even if they're miles away. Parents can now sleep well at night knowing their precious cargo is safe on the road, and drivers can enjoy the added freedom that comes with that peace of mind," Michael Maddux, director of product development at Verizon Telematics, in a statement.

The Hum update will also give owners the ability to view exactly where their car is on a digital map, as well as the vehicle's speed and travel direction. A new driving history feature will also provide detailed information about a car's trips, including their start and end times, idle times, and both maximum and average speeds.
