5G wireless technology is expected to reach U.S. consumers by 2020, but it's not as easy as flipping a switch, so Verizon will launch field technology trials next year.
In partnership with Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, and Samsung, Verizon's teams are working to "ensure an aggressive pace of innovation." Already, 5G network environments, or "sandboxes," are being created in the company's Waltham, Mass., and San Francisco Innovation Centers.
"5G is no longer a dream of the distant future," Roger Gurnani, chief information and technology architect for Verizon, said in a statement. "We feel a tremendous sense of urgency to push forward on 5G and mobilize the ecosystem by collaborating with industry leaders and developers to usher in a new generation of innovation."
During its inaugural Technology Forum, Verizon promised about 50 times the throughput of current 4G LTE with 5G, only single-millisecond delays, and the ability to handle "exponentially" more Internet-connected devices to accommodate the Internet of Things.
"Collectively we are bringing to bear an incredible amount of resources and intellectual capital to introduce the next generation of wireless technology," Gurnani boasted.
"When you're planning a technological evolution at this scale it must be a collaboration of players in the ecosystem," Marcus Weldon, CTO of Alcatel-Lucent and president of Bell Labs, said. "Having Verizon initiate this effort now, even as 4G LTE technology has so much headroom left, will no doubt add to the rich fabric of our digital lives for many years to come."
Today, more than 98 percent of the U.S. population has access to 4G LTE, with 87 percent of Verizon's data traffic running over the network.
