While most people don't yet have 4K TVs, Sharp is already prepping an 8K screen.
The Japanese manufacturer first demoed its 85-inch 8K display during CES 2013, and it will finally arrive on Oct. 30. But the 7,680-by-4,320-pixel screen is not cheap; it will set you back $133,000.
As Engadget pointed out, the LV-85001 is more a monitor than a TV. It includes a TV tuner, so you could use it as one, but there is a very limited amount of 8K content, so you'd have nothing to watch. As a result, Sharp has its sights set on businesses that can put an 8K display to work—perhaps for graphics or signage.
Sharp did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company's website confirms the upcoming technology, though most details are lost in translation.
The LV-85001 will be on display at the CEATEC trade show in Japan early next month.
As for 4K programming, NASA will deliver 4K space footage beginning Nov. 1. Amazon and Netflix are also offering limited 4K streams for those with UHD TV sets, but if you'd rather go the DVD route, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) started licensing the new Ultra HD Blu-ray format on Aug. 24, so DVD players that support it should be ready by year's end.
