A Raspberry Pi touch display is on sale today for $60.
Available online, the 7-inch touch-screen monitor turns any Raspberry Pi Model A+, Model B+ and Raspberry Pi 2 Model B into a mobile device.
Folks running the latest Raspbian operating system can tap into 10-finger touch and an on-screen keyboard, turning the credit card-sized Pi computer and new monitor into a portable machine.
"Two years ago, I began the process of looking for a simple, embeddable display for the Raspberry Pi," Director of Software Gordon Hollingworth wrote in a blog post. "I honestly believed it would only take us six months from start to end, but there were a number of issues we met … But we've finally got there."
The first displays are on sale as a kit, which requires some DIY construction. Buyers will get a 7-inch display, an adapter board, mounting screws, and a Perspex layer frame in a variety of colors. It also comes with the DSI ribbon cable and jumper wires used to power and connect the Pi. The required Raspberry Pi board and power supply are sold separately.
Once established, the new screen becomes the default display, replacing HDMI. Users, however, can reset to HDMI as their preferred display. It is possible to use both, Hollingworth explained, but requires certain software, such as the Omxplayer app.
Programmer Matt Timmons-Brown also designed a 3D-printed stand for the display, available on Thingiverse.
Plus, Hollingworth is developing an app to control a home and heating monitoring system, "so you'll probably hear more about that at some point," he said.
