New Toshiba Chromebook 2 Boasts Faster Broadwell CPU

The Toshiba Chromebook 2 is getting an update next month, bringing more processing power to the table with two different models.

Purchase the notebook with either fifth-generation (Broadwell) Intel Core i3 or Celeron processors, both of which offer a speed upgrade over their predecessors for faster browsing.

Toshiba Chromebook 2The faster Core i3 will be available for $429.99, while the Celeron version will remain at $329.99, the same price as the original Toshiba Chromebook 2K. Both models come with 4GB of memory.

The impressive 13.3-inch, 1,920-by-1,080-resolution in-plane-switching (IPS) display will remain, but is "engineered to fit...in a 12-inch body" and weighs 2.9 pounds, Toshiba said. The new iteration will also feature a backlit keyboard for the first time, a welcome upgrade for travel and low-light environments. Toshiba says the battery life is rated for 8.5 hours (the original Toshiba Chromebook 2 lasted 7 hours and 4 minutes in our battery rundown test).

Also carrying over from the original are Skullcandy speakers, an HD webcam, an SD card slot, one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, and HDMI out. The notebook will include 802.11.ac wireless and Bluetooth 4.0.
