Need a Restaurant Suggestion? Ask Google Maps Explore

The next time you're searching for some classic Mission-style Mexican food in San Francisco, or looking for a quiet-ish spot in New York City's Theater District for a pre-show bite, Google has you covered.

The Web giant updated the Explore feature of Google Maps for Android with restaurant recommendations tailored to where you're going, the time of day you're eating, and the vibe you're looking for. At this point, the feature is only available for those in the U.S. and U.K.

"The best spot for a quick bite alone may not be your top pick for a dinner with friends," Google Senior Product Manager Murali Viswanathan wrote in a blog post Wednesday. "With today's Google Maps update, no matter the occasion — think Lunch nearby right now or Best spots for dinner with kids this weekend — you can be confident that Google Maps has you covered."

You'll see options like "best dinners," "make it fast," "make it cheap," and "where the locals go."

Once you enter your location and select a category that sounds good, Google Maps will offer a list of suggested spots. From there, you can narrow down your options by scanning the photos, ratings, and reviews for each place.

The update also includes specially curated recommendations in New York City, San Francisco, and London.

"Now you can discover what is unique (and delicious!) about the neighborhood you're in — whether it's pre-theater dining in the Theater District in NYC, Dolores Park picnic fare in the Mission in San Francisco, or centuries-old pubs in The City in London," Viswanathan wrote.

Google in July 2014 first introduced the Explore button — located in the bottom right corner of the map — which offers a quick look at nearby hot spots. Click on Explore to discover nearby results, or expand your range from a five-minute walk to a 20-minute drive to find even more options.
