Instagram Revamps Direct Messaging

After rolling out one of the biggest changes in its history last week, Instagram is at it again.

The Facebook-owned photo and video-sharing app on Tuesday announced some improvements for its Direct messaging feature, including threaded conversations and the ability to send content right from your feed as a private message.

Now, instead of creating a new conversation every time you send a photo or video to someone, Instagram will group your messages based on the people in them. You can also name your groups, so you can quickly send inside jokes to your "BFFs" or pics of your furry feline to all the "Cat Lovers" on your list. Besides that, Instagram has added a new quick camera feature, so you can reply to messages with a fast selfie, and extra-large emojis "for when there are just no words."

"Today's updates also bring a brand new way to start conversations around what you see on Instagram," the company wrote in a blog post. "When you find something inspiring or funny, your first instinct is often to share it with friends who you know will appreciate it. Today, people do this by @-mentioning friends in comments, so much so that nearly 40 percent of comments include an @-mention. This update has made it easier to share content that you love."

Under every post, you'll see a small arrow next to the like and comment icons. Click that to send the post to a friend or group as a private message using Instagram Direct. The image or video will appear as part of your conversation, and you can tap it to see and like the original post. You can also share hashtag and location pages via the arrow icon in the top right corner.

"Privacy works the same way as it always has on Instagram," the company said. "Photos and videos sent using Direct are only visible to people who could already see them. If the owner of a photo or video has their account set to private, only people who follow their account will be able to see it if it's sent as a message in Direct."

To check out these new features, grab Instagram version 7.5 in the App Store or Google Play now.

Meanwhile, Instagram isn't the only one making messaging improvements. LinkedIn unveiled a new chat-style interface.
