U.K. telecom firm BT has grand plans for the country's digital future.
By 2020, the provider wants 10 million homes and small businesses to have access to speeds of 300-500 Mbps, with gigabit Internet on the horizon, too.
Until then, BT will focus on delivering a new universal minimum broadband speed of 5-10Mbps.
BT CEO Gavin Patterson outlined the company's plans during a Tuesday appearance in London. "We want to forge an ultrafast future for Britain and stand ready to help [the] government deliver the broadband speeds necessary for every property to enjoy modern day Internet services, such as high-definition TV streaming and cloud computing," Patterson said. "To achieve this, we need a collaborative effort across industry and government."
The "majority" of homes in BT's service area should have super-fast 300-500 Mbps service in the next decade, he said. That includes "a combination of Fibre-to-the-Premises technology, as well as new G.fast technology, which uses existing Fibre-to-the-Cabinet technology."
BT in January announced new pilots of its "G.fast" technology. Two of those trials ran over the summer in England's Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, and Gosforth, Newcastle; about 4,000 homes and businesses were invited to participate.
