2016 Nissan Leaf Offers 107-Mile Range

Have you been thinking of switching to an electric car, but still have range anxiety? Nissan might have the solution.

The automaker on Thursday introduced its 2016 all-electric Leaf with an available 30 kWh battery, which provides a range of 107 miles. That's a 27 percent increase over the previous 24 kWh battery found in the 2015 model.

The new battery comes standard in the Leaf SV and SL models while the base Leaf S will still come with the 24 kWh battery, which offers a range of 84 miles.

As for pricing, the 2016 Nissan Leaf with the 30 kWh battery starts at $35,050 for the SV and $37,640 for the SL, according to Autoblog. The base S model with the smaller battery pack starts at $28,060. Those prices reflect an $850 delivery fee, but remember that you can get a potential federal tax incentive of $7,500.

"The new battery is just one of several enhancements for the 2016 Leaf," Nissan's Director of electric vehicle sales and marketing, Andrew Speaker, said in a statement. "We're also bringing audio and connectivity upgrades."

That includes an "enhanced IT system," which Nissan said is more user friendly and offers more connectivity options.

The base Leaf S comes with a 5-inch color display with the NissanConnect infotainment system, which includes Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free text messaging. The SV and SL both come with a 7-inch display with additional features like voice recognition for navigation and audio and HD radio.

All Leaf models come with an 80kW AC synchronous motor, which generates 107 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque. On the environmental front, the Leaf has no tailpipe, meaning there is no emission of CO2 or other greenhouse gases.

Rivals like Chevy and Tesla, meanwhile, are prepping electric vehicles that could travel 200 miles on a single charge.
